DOUG CHAPMAN

I have over 20 years of experience in learning and development and work with a broad range of clients in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. I design and deliver engaging programmes in leadership and management, talent programmes, team development and am a qualified coach.

I am passionate about the long-term development of people, both adults and children. One of my proudest achievements was helping the school where I was a governor and co-chair to shape and maintain its purpose to “inspire lifelong learning for our children” and seeing this recognized by parents, staff and school inspectors.

I also love to learn and communicate in other languages, which helps me build great relationships with people from different cultures.

Long story...

After studying modern languages at university, I took a graduate role in the pub/restaurant industry. Due to my aptitude for management and customer service, I worked my way up to an area management position.  This involved running 20 pubs with a combined turnover of £10m. The role was an excellent introduction to people management, and also introduced me to my first experience of learning and development as I was tasked with training managers in everything from auditing to Microsoft Office programs.

This experience led to a burgeoning interest in L&D and as a result I went on to do corporate training on cruise ships, developing crew members in areas such as induction training, safety training, management and leadership, customer service and English language. On my return to the UK, I undertook a role as a sales manager for a gourmet food firm, where I was consistently the top performer.

I later decided to return to the training arena, this time working for a major railway service where I was tasked with designing and delivering training programmes for 2500 staff.  My most recent permanent role was with a learning and development consultancy, with whom I worked for 9 years. I had various roles as a consultant (designing and delivering programmes for the parent engineering company and a broad range of external clients, from junior management to Board level), an account manager for clients in financial services and social housing, graduate development programme manager and finally Head of Leadership Capability. In this role, I was responsible for setting and developing the overall training strategy for the Management and Leadership team.

I set up my own business in L&D consultancy in 2016. I have worked with a wide range of clients in different sectors (Engineering, Manufacturing, Retail, Food Production, Transportation, Housing, Civil Service, Financial Services). I have designed and facilitated interactive workshops, consulted on learning programmes, undertaken individual and team coaching, and assessed learners for coaching accreditation and apprenticeship qualifications.

I am fluent in several languages including English, French and Spanish and am able to deliver training to a wide range of participants.  I have worked with companies across the globe, as well as a number of domestic organizations who have a multinational workforce. Outside of work, I have been a Co-Chair of Governors for his local primary school and has coached a local under 10 boys football team.
